It has been more than half a century since the first appearance of 'Abdullah
Yusuf 'Ali's superlative work, The Holy Quran: Text, Translation and Commentary.
Since that time, there have been innumerable reprinting and millions of copies
distributed throughout the world. It is, by far, the best known, most studied,
and most respected English translation of the Qur'an. It was the first
monumental and authoritative work of its kind and it subsequently inspired many
such similar endeavors. The eloquent poetic style of the translation and the
authenticity of the extensive commentaries and explanatory notes, have, no
doubt, contributed greatly to its much deserved reputation as the English
translation of the meaning of the Qur'an.
The form of this newly revised
edition has undergone a more dramatic change in style and has been vastly
improved in order to facilitate its readability and study. The type for the
English text has been completely reset for the first time, thereby making the
character definition more legible after many years of reprinting.
Abdullah Yusuf Ali says in the Preface to the first edition
'The English shall be, not mere substitute of one word for another, but the best expression I can give to the fullest meaning which I can understand from the Arabic text. The rhythm, music, and exalted tone of the original should be reflected in the English interpretation. It may be but a faint reflection, but such beauty and power as my pen commands shall be brought to
it's service'
'Do
they not then Earnestly seek to Understand the Qur'an, or are their Hearts
locked up By them?' [TMQ Muhammad (47):
24
"Then
do they not Reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon [their]
hearts?"
{TMQ 47:24}.
"Praise be to Allah, who has sent to his servants the book, and has allowed therein no Crookedness:"
[al-Kahf:1]

There are great virtues
mentioned in ahadith for certain Surahs of the Qur'an for example:
Surah al Waqiah (56)
The Prophet (PBUH) said, 'Whoever recites
surah al Waqiah at night would never encounter poverty' [Ibn Sunni ]
The Prophet (PBUH) said, 'Surah al Waqiah is
the Surah of Wealth, so recite it and teach it to your children' [Ibn Asakir]
Surah al Kafiroon (109)
The Prophet (PBUH) said, 'Recite surah
al Kafiroon and then go to sleep after coming to its end, for it is a clearance
from shirk' [Abu Dawud & Hakim ]
Surah al Ikhlas (112)
A man said to the Prophet (PBUH), 'I
really love this surah'. The Prophet replied, 'And your love for it will enable
you to enter paradise' [Tirmidhi]
The Prophet (PBUH) said, 'By Him in Whose hand
my soul is, it is equal to one third of the Qur'an!' [Bukhari]
Surah al Falaq (113)
The Prophet (PBUH) said, 'O Uqba, learn
to recite Surah al Falaq, for you would never recite a surah more cherished by
Allah and more profound in His sight than this surah' [Durais, Ibn al Anbari,
Hakim, Dhahabi & Ibn Mardawaih]
The Prophet (PBUH) used to seek refuge from the
jinn as well as from the evil eye until Surah al Falaq and An Naas were
revealed. Afterwhich he would recite these two for those purposes. [Tirmidhi ]
