Introduction by Shaikh Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi

Daryabadi cogently demonstrates how the Quran stands out above other Scriptures

The Glorious Quran is an abridged version of Abdul Majid Daryabadis Tafsir al-Quran (Lucknow, Academy of Islamic Research and Publications, 4 Volumes, 1981-85). In addition to presenting a truly faithful and idiomatic English translation which retains almost all the original Arabic syntax and word-order in its translation of the Quranic text, Daryabadis work represents as an admirable venture into comparative religion. Based on a thoroughly critical study of the Bible in particular, as also other major world faiths, anthropology and history in general, Daryabadi cogently demonstrates how the Quran stands out above other Scriptures which have been tamped with down the ages. Another valuable element of the work is the elucidation of Islam which it provides-its life-giving articles of faith, its life-sustaining teachings and its life-enriching worldview in a manner best suited for the English speaking reading public.

ABDUL MAJID DARYABADI (1892-1977), born in India, obtained his BA (honors) in Philosophy from Canning College, Lucknow in 1912. He devoted his whole life to the cause of Islam and published scores of books and articles in both English and Urdu, which bring out the excellence of Islam. Throughout his academic career he edited the Urdu weekly Sachch and then Sidq (1925-76), which was acclaimed in the Indo-Pak Subcontinent for its inspiring message and stylistic features. Daryabadi was actively associated with the Khilafat Movement; Royal Asiatic Society, London; Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh; Nadwatul Ulema, Lucknow; Shibli Academy, Azamgarh and several other leading Islamic and literary organizations. In addition to contributing an extensive commentary on the Quran in English, Daryabadi wrote also an independent Tafsir in Urdu published as Tafsir Majidi (Lucknow, Academy of Islamic Research and Publications

In the Shade of the Qur'an Volume 9
Fi Zilal al-Qur'an
By Sayyid Qutb
Translated & Edited by: M.A. Salahi & A.A Shamis
Pages: Paper Back Published in UK
Surahs 10 & 11 (Yunus & Hud)

Ever since its revelation 1400 years ago, the Qur'an has been a book of guidance and inspiration, a reference point, and a rich source of social and moral dynamism for hundreds of millions of people throughout the world who believe it to be immutable word of God. Hardly a generation passes without a fresh attempt to unravel the meanings of the Qur'an and gain deeper insight into its universal message within a contemporary perspective.

In The Shade Of The Qur'an is more than 'just another' commentary; yet it is not too over-reaching or outlandish to be a completely new interpretation. It is an earnest, sincere and sober look at man's contemporary achievements and difficulties in the light of the message of the Qur'an. It is an effort to vigorously explore its rich wisdom, and expand its invaluable guidance for the benefit of an increasingly 'sophisticated' , yet highly perplexed modern society.

The work, which is by far Sayyid Qutb's largest and most profound, spans the whole of the text of the Qur'an. It was written, and partly re-written, over a period of more than 15 years, most of which the author had spent in Egyptian prisons, during the 1950s and 1960s. In it is embedded Sayyid Qutb's insight, highly esteemed intellectual vigor, and his widely-acclaimed literary prowess.

In The Shade Of The Qur'an has been universally recognized as an outstanding contribution to Islamic thought and scholarship, to which students and scholars, as well as contemporary Islamic revivalist movements all over the world, owe a great deal. Now that it is available in English, it will continue to enlighten and inspire millions more. It will take its rightful place as an indispensable work of reference for a proper understanding of contemporary Islamic thinking.

Surah Yunus :
The Surah takes its name from V. 98, in which there is a reference to Prophet Yunus (Jonah). The name, as usual, is symbolical and does not indicate that the Surah deals with the story of Prophet Jonah.
This discourse deals with the invitation to the Message, admonition and warning.

Surah Hud:
The Surah deals with the same subject as Surah Yunus, that is, invitation to the Message, admonition and warning, with this difference that the warning is sterner.
