Imam Muhyi ddin Abi Zakariyah
Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi Al-Dimashqi knows simply as Imam Nawawi
was Born in the village of Nawa in Southern
Syria, Imam Nawawi spent most of his life in Damascus where he lived in a
simple manner, devoted to Allah, engaging single-mindedly in worship, study,
writing and teaching various Islamic sciences. .
Although best known for his works in hadith, Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi
(d. 676/1277) was also the Imam of the later Shafi'i school of Jurisprudence,
and widely acknowledged as the intellectual heir to Imam
Shafi'i. He was a renowned scholar and jurist who dedicated his life
to the pursuit of Islamic learning.
Imam Nawawi died at the young age of 44 years, leaving behind him numerous
works of great

Imam an-Nawawi assembled his collection of forty two ahadith together with the
minimum of fiqh and commentary necessary for people not to misunderstand them.
Imam Nawawi describes this work as follows in his introduction
"I, however, considered it best to bring together forty hadith more
important than all of these, being forty hadith which would incorporate all of
these, each hadith being one of the great precepts of religion, described by
religious scholars as being "the axis of Islam " or "the half
of Islam" or "the third of it ", or
the like, and to make it a rule that these forty hadith be [classified as]
sound and that the majority of them be in the Sahihs of Al-Bukhari and
Muslim."
He goes on to Say:
"Every person wishing to attain the Hereafter should know these hadith
because of the important matters they contain and the directions they give in
respect of all forms of obedience, this being obvious to anyone who has
reflected upon it"
Keeping the
importance of the subject this Book entitled Forty Gems has been
compiled with Arabic text and translated In simple English language with
specifac meanings of Hadith terminology, phrases and useful explanatory notes
by Dr.Muhammad Yusuf Abbasi professor of History in Qaid-I-Azam University,
Islamabad.
About Imam Nawawi
The learned Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi
also known as Mohy-ud-Din and Shaikh-ul-Islam (d. 676AH/1277AD) had a very
short life but even during this short period, he had written a large number of
books on different subjects. Every work of the Imam is a masterwork and a
treasure of knowledge. Hundreds and thousands of people benefit from these
works.
