Islam and Secularism in the Middle East Western-inspired secularism as implemented by such people as Ataturk and Nasser is increasingly cited by many Muslims as the source of the region’s social dislocation and political instability. Some of the contributors to this book explain the Islamic rejection of secularism as a failed Western Christian ideal; others discuss how secularisation was pioneered by those who thought Muslims could only advance politically by emulating Western practices, which included the renunciation of religion. Other questions addressed include how plausible is Islam’s challenge to the ideal and reality of secularism? Will Islam triumph over the era of secularisation? How significant is the trend of ‘spiritual politics’ in the West? And are we witnessing the beginning of an age of post-secularism which may be the catalyst for genuine social and political reform in the Middle East? It is natural for books like this that no reader will agree with everything. Still it is informative about a debate among Muslims, and between Muslims and non-Muslims, that is central to the problems facing the Ummah. Despite its limitations, books of this type, on many key issues, are needed in order to provide a basis for genuine discussion within the Islamic movement |
